HOW WE STARTED

The Detroit Stylin' Skate Club, a 501c(3) nonprofit (DSSC), was founded in 2022 by Patreze Brinkley, a passionate Detroit Style skater with deep roots in the community. Patreze learned to skate when she could balance walking, by her father, Yancie Brinkley—an advanced Detroit Style instructor in the late 1980s and early '90s—guiding her through the fundamentals of the sport. In 2021, Patreze returned to the skating scene, recognizing a void in the community's performance and competitive spirit.

Through the Yancie Brinkley Tribute Show, Patreze reignited the community’s love for Detroit Style, inspiring a new generation of youth to get involved. By creating a safe, fun-filled, and creative environment, the DSSC has become a hub for skaters looking to hone their skills while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Detroit Style rollerskating.

A LOOK AHEAD

Due to the demand of Detroit Style rollerskating performances, Patreze enlisted the help of veteran Detroit Style skaters to form what is now The Detroit Stylin’ Skate Club (DSSC), a non profit organization. to coach, teach, and mentor rollerskaters novice to performance and competition. With over 150 years of roller skating training and experience combined, our club is committed to cultivating the community into a positive and progressive environment for the past, present and future generations of roller skating.

As a registered member of USA Roller Sports (USARS), the DSSC proudly advocates for the Culture Roll, a new sport which introduced Detroit Style as a  discipline. Our mission is to promote and spread Detroit Style rollerskating across cities, states, and countries, with the ultimate goal of earning a place in the 2028 Olympic Games. With the recent inclusion of skateboarding, surfing, and breaking in the Olympics, and the growing global recognition of rollerskating, we are confident that Detroit Style will make its mark on the world stage. To date, we have successfully trained skaters in 10 of the 70 countries required for recognition by the U.S. Olympic Committee, further advancing our goal of global participation.

In partnership with Detroit Roller Wheels, located on Schoolcraft, the DSSC hosts a variety of events, including fundraisers, themed performances, and competitions. To date, our club has grown to 36 members, comprising performers, competitive athletes, coaches, administrative staff, and a DJ. During our inaugural season, we proudly produced three skaters who competed at the Culture Roll – National Style Skate Competition, which will be hosted in Detroit on August 20, 2024. These three skaters each earned 1st Place Advanced, 1st Place Intermediate, and 3rd Place Intermediate in their respective divisions, showcasing the talent and dedication of our club.

We are eager to continue expanding the reach of Detroit Style rollerskating and look forward to future collaborations with partners who share our vision of bringing this unique style to the forefront. With a focus on fostering talent, community, and competition, the DSSC offers a unique opportunity for sponsors to be part of a growing movement that blends tradition with innovation.
